What is an Icedam and why is it a problem in New York?

If you came to this page you most likely are now becoming too familiar with the phrase Ice Dam and discovering how damaging they can become. Many houses in Fredonia New York are built to withstand large accumulating roof snow loads. The roof ice buildup becomes the problem however, when the large volume of snow is accompanied by subzero weather for weeks at a time.

How does cold weather form Ice Dams?

Lake effect snow can pile up quickly along the shores of Lake Erie in cities like Dunkirk and Jamestown But doesn’t usually lead to ice dam problems. The real issue is poor attic insulation. The cold weather causes many poorly insulated houses to turn the heat way up to compensate for all the heat being lost through the attic, which unfortunately is being trapped by the rooftop snow.

This is how escaping heat from the attic causes ice dam to form

Snow is a great insulator and will hold the warm air in the attic, but melts the bottom layer of snow in direct contact with the shingles being warmed by the attic even in subzero weather. This is what feeds the problem of the growing icicles on the edge of the roof because the water refreezes at the edge of the roof.
If the weather remains below freeze by and icicles left untreated will begin to trap the water from the melted snow on the roof. The water may refreeze at the roof edge but over the warm attic it can stay well above freezing and become a large pool of water behind the growing ice buildup. The pooling water is not good for shingles as they are designed to shed water and when submerged the water will actually travel through the nails holding the shingles down and enter inside the house.

How do you prevent and remove an Ice Dam?

Preventing an Icedam is the best solution. Here are some steps to prevent roof ice buildup.
1. Install added insulation in the attic
2. Install heated gutter cables along the roof edge and inside the Gutters to keep them open and flowing in freezing weather conditions
3. Roof raking to help keep shingles near roof edge exposed to the sunlight which will help melt small accusations of ice along the end of the shingles.
4. Throw calcium pellets or calcium chloride in socks one the problem area of the roof.
5. If water is leaking into the house call a company to come remove the ice dam with steam. If you start pounding away with a sledgehammer or an axe on the ice it may stop the leak but often times you will need to repair or replace that section of roof in the spring. Pounding on roofs with a large sledge is very common when ice damming occurs but just think about what you are doing to the shingles and roof structure underneath. You will often see large chunks of ice come off the roof along with prices of shingles still frozen to the ice falling off. It may not be apparent until the snow melts and you see shingles littering the yard.

Steam Ice Dam Roof Snow Removal Urbana and Champaign Illinois

Looking for Snow and Ice Dam Removal from your Roof in Champaign Illinois?

If you cam to this page most likely you are just learning about what an ice dam is.  If fact you likely have never even heard the term before you notices your roof leaking outside while there is snow.

Almost every year there are roof ice buildups large enough to cause leaks into the home, due to the large icicles damming or trapping the water on the roof.  it is very common on flat or low slope roofs and around the valleys.

What is an ice dam?

Icedams or as many people incorrectly pronounce it as an Ice Jam is a large formation of ice at the roofs edge that holds water on the roof and if large enough can causes the roof to leak.

Below is a picture that explains the formation of an Ice Dam

This is how escaping heat from the attic causes ice dam to form

The melting snow on the roof is the source of the water forming the icicles in the gutters of your home.  Poor attic insulation is the real culprit causing the snow to melt on your home when the weather is actually subzero.

If your attic is not well insulated, the heat from the living spaces leak inside the attic and causes the bottom layer of snow touching the warm shingles to melt slowly.  When the melted snow reaches the area above the roof where there is no heat from living area escaping it refreezes in subzero weather.  When enough ice fills your gutters and bigness to buildup on your roofs edge it can begin to trap the water on the roof.

In severe cold weather it is not uncommon to see standing water still heated from the house trapped behind the ice above the soffit or non heated space.  Now Illinois is now know for much snow, especially around Champaign and Urbana, but the houses also are not build to withstand large snow loads.

Does Illinois Get Enough Snow for Icedams?

Because Southern Illinois is not know for having tremendous snow falls, there may not be much ice and water shield on the roofs edge which is designed to prevent leaking due to snow and ice.

This means it doesn’t take as large of an ice dam to cause a leak into the home.  So how do you prevent ant ice dam?

  1. Insulate the attic space
  2. Install heat cables in a zigzag pattern along the roof edge
  3. Rake the edge of the roof of snow.  This will allow the sun to heat the shingles and melt light ice accumulation along the roofs edge
  4. Throw calcium pellets or Socks full of calcium to melt the ice.
  5. Do not take a Chainsaw, Chisel, or Blowtorch to get the ice off the roof, you may make a much bigger problem to your roof while stopping the current leak.

Steam Ice Dam Removal is safest method for your roof.

This method will work faster than about any other method and won’t damage your shingles.  Make sure the steam is hot enough cut the ice but also needs low pressure to not damage the shingles.  Heated pressure washers do not get the water hot enough to rapidly melt the ice and can end up depending more on the high pressure to get rid of the ice.  This high pressure can damage the roof causing granular loss and even holes in the shingles in extreme cases.

Erie News Now | WICU & WSEE in Erie, PA

2018 is off to a crazy arctic year.  Temperatures in parts of the US are colder than the arctic.  Lake effect snow from Erie has buried Parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

How do I know if i have an Ice Dam?

Icicles building up on the edge of your roof and overfilling your gutters is a good indication you may have and Ice Build up occurring. This can be more than a nuisance as its not just large icicles dangling from the gutters but actually the indicate the presence of the snow melt damning behind the ice build up.

Visual guide to the development of the Ice Dam and how they occur.

This is how snow and rain end up breaking into the house through an ice dam

The above diagram shows the process which generally takes about a week of subzero weather with the presence of significant snow accumulation on the roof.   This process can take much longer if you have more attic insulation.

A poor insulated attic space causes heat to escape the home and get trapped under the snow which actually can be a better insulator than the insulation itself.  Many people with poor insulation turn their thermostats hotter as the weather gets colder, causing an even more rapid heat loss though the attic.  The colder it gets can cause the ice to form more rapidly because the source of the dam is the melting snow from the roof.

The snow flakes on the roof that are in direct contact with the shingles actually melt even though the temperature outside can be much colder than 32 degrees F.  This cause the water from the snow melt to refreeze when it gets past the living space usually in the gutters and above the soffits.  a few inches of ice accumulation along the gutter is normal but as it grows taller the water becomes trapped behind the dam.

It is possible the have large ice piled up at the edge of the roof, and just past the living space having standing water on the roof that you can dip your whole hand into.  Roofs are designed to shed water not hold water and the water will actually drip into the attic and house threw the nail holes of the shingles when there is the presence of pooling water.

What should you do if you Have a Large Ice Buildup on the roof edge?

If there is a several day warm up where temperatures stay above freezing both day and night will cause the ice to either melt away or because severely brittle and thus can eliminate the problem; however if the forecast indicates no warm up soon you man need to get proactive to avoid greater problems in the future.

Tips to removal of roof ice
  1. Rake the snow off the edges of the roof.  This keeps shingles exposed so the sun can warm up the shingles and melt small accumulations of ice.
  2. Fill socks with calcium Chloride and lay on the area of concern.  This generally works more effectively than the calcium pucks but the calcium circles can be easier to install because you can pile them up in the same place or throw from the ground to the roof if you are patient. LOL.
  3. Install heated gutter cables along the edge of the roof and in the gutters to help melt the snow when it first falls.  Hint – if you already have an ice dam its probably too late.
  4. Monitor the situation.  If you notice icicles starting to drip from the soffit or running down the siding, you already have a serious problem going on and need to remove the ice ASAP.  If left untreated, the first warm day will cause major leaking into the house.
  5. Do not start banging aways with a sledgehammer, Hammer drill, Axe, chainsaw, or even a blow torch.  Yes, these are pretty common to see when you do this for a living.

Safest option for your roof is Low Pressure Gentle Ice Dam Steaming.

Our low pressure high temperature steam is one the fastest ways to eliminate ice damming with out damaging the roof.  It is so fast in fact, it is common for us to stop an interior leak within 20-30 minutes of our crews beginning work.  There are companies that offer high pressure lower temperature ice removal at lower costs, but this can not only damage the roof but also take many times longer to remove the ice buildup.
